“Wisdom is going to show up in a lot of places, but only if you are looking for it.”

The B Corp movement may be the most important movement of the 21st century given the widespread impacts of business on the planet and the vast potential for business to be a force for good. Jay Gilbert is a co-founder of B Lab, the social enterprise behind the B Corp movement. “B” is for “benefit,” and together with B Lab’s other founders, Jay is a recipient of the prestigious Skoll Award for Social Entrepreneurship because of the global benefits from B Lab's efforts redefining success in business.

Certified B Corps are one route to redefining success in business.  A certified B Corporation is to business what USDA Organic certification is to food. Individually, B Corps are for-profit companies that meet the highest standards of verified social and environmental performance, public transparency, and legal accountability. They include high profile companies like Patagonia and Ben and Jerry’s Ice Cream.

Collectively, B Corps lead a growing global movement of people using business to solve social and environmental problems. In addition, the B Corp community is catalyzing policy change across the United States and world to enable companies to register as benefit corporations, thereby legally protecting and bounding them to serve the triple bottom line. B Lab also is driving impact investment to companies doing well by doing good through their GIIRS rating system.

As founder of AND1, Jay left his role as CEO of the $250 million company to pursue his vision of a shared and durable prosperity for all. He is a Henry Crown Fellow of the Aspen Institute and a Board member of Investors' Circle, an organization dedicated to the acceleration of patient capital markets for a sustainable future. In this interview we discover how the B Corp movement has scaled across countries and continents by embodying restorative leadership and learn what it takes to be ranked as the best company - not just in the world, but for the world.

Catalyze Business To Be A Force For Good

B Corp is to business what Fair Trade certification is to your coffee or USDA Organic certification is to your veggies.

B Corps are for-profit companies certified by the not-for-profit B Lab to meet rigorous standards of social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency.

Today, there is a growing community of thousands of Certified B Corps from countries and industries around the world working together toward 1 unifying goal: to redefine success in business.

Drawing on best practices from 100+ B Corps, The B Corp Handbook: How Use Business a Force for Good, by Ryan Honeyman shows that using business as a force for good can help distinguish your company in a crowded market, attract and retain the best employees, and increase customer trust, loyalty, and evangelism for your brand.
